DALLAS (AP) – A prominent Dallas attorney who has represented the families of blacks killed by police officers says he is running for Texas attorney general.
Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt announced over the weekend that he would challenge Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Merritt said on Twitter Saturday that “Texas deserves an attorney general who will fight for the constitutional rights of all citizens.”
It is unclear whether he will seek or receive support from the state’s Democratic Party.
People who want to run for the Texas Attorney General are unable to submit candidacy papers for months.
However, the 2022 election attracted early attention following new criminal charges against Paxton, who has denied any wrongdoing.
