DeSantis, Florida governor signs anti-vote legislation

On Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed and approved a bill that will make it harder for citizens to vote.

DeSantis has long touted the bill as an anti-fraud measure, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel – although there is no evidence that widespread electoral fraud occurred in the 2020 general election.

Black Enterprise notes that the bill, also known as SB 90, was introduced into Florida law around the same time that Republican-dominated governments in other states were introducing similar laws across the country.

These actions came after the Republican Party lost several states it won in the 2016 presidential election, including Georgia, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

In any case, Conservatives have claimed that election fraud contributed to the loss of former President Donald Trump – even though Trump lost to Joe Biden by a wide margin.

The new law, says the Sun Sentinel, creates a number of voting restrictions, such as:

Restrictions on the use of ballot boxes; and faster expiration dates for postal ballot papers; and new, cumbersome procedures for collecting and counting postal ballot papers.

The legislation also prevents a person from owning or returning more than two postal ballot papers at the same time. While this latter measure is intended to prevent “ballot harvesting,” again there is no evidence that large-scale ballot harvesting took place in Florida or anywhere else in the country.

“We believe that the future will be even better. Therefore, we are proud of the progress we have made,” said DeSantis shortly after signing the bill. “We’re not resting on our laurels, and I’m signing this bill here, Florida, your vote counts. Your vote will be cast with integrity and transparency and this is a great place for democracy. “

The Sun Sentinel notes that Republican DeSantis appears to have scheduled the signing to match Fox News’ schedule for its Fox & Friends program.

Democrats and other liberals have since criticized SB 90 for being too restrictive – and apparently pointless. Sean Foreman, a political scientist at Barry University, told Sun-Sentinel that Governor DeSantis himself praised the integrity of the 2020 Florida elections soon after they were held and completed.

“DeSantis touted the success of the Florida elections in November. The day after the election, DeSantis said other states should follow Florida’s example. Why are we changing Florida’s model? “Foreman asked.
