WASHINGTON: The Joint Chiefs of Staff today condemned last week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol in a public message unprecedented by the nation’s top military leaders.
The chairman, General Mark Milley, vice-chairman General John Hyten, and the other six members of the Joint Chiefs called the insurrection “a direct attack on the US Congress, the Capitol and our constitutional process” and all signed a memo to say the Joint Force :
“As service members, we must embody the values and ideals of the nation. We support and defend the constitution. Any act that disrupts the constitutional process not only violates our traditions, values and our oath. it’s against the law. “
They also note that the US military remains fully committed to the protection and defense of the United States Constitution against all enemies, domestically and internationally. I don’t think we need to elaborate on the inclusion of the word domestic.
Interestingly, the memo does not appear on the JCS website or the official Pentagon website, Defense.gov.
The uniformed leaders said they “witnessed actions inside the Capitol building that were incompatible with the rule of law. The right to freedom of expression and assembly does not give anyone the right to use them Violence, riot and insurrection (Emphasis added). “
In a clear signal, which should both reassure confidence in our democracy and reaffirm that the military does not play a role in any action against the federal government – “concentrate on the mission”, it says in the memo.
“We support and defend the constitution. Any act that disrupts the constitutional process not only violates our traditions, values and our oath. it is against the law, ”they state.
In order for no one in the service to have any doubts, they claim that “President-elect Biden will be inaugurated and become our 46th Supreme Commander.
“For our men and women who are on duty and at home protecting our country – stand by, keep an eye on the horizon and keep your focus on the mission. We honor your continued service in the defense of every American. “
