This obituary is part of “We Will Remember,” a series about those we’ve lost to the coronavirus.
Attorney Arthur Bowman Jr., 65, a lifelong Detroiter who leaves a legacy of service to his community died May 1 at Henry Ford Hospital after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
He was born to Arthur and Thelma Bowman and graduated from Cooley High School before earning his undergraduate degree and Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University.
Known as “Art” to many, he was passionate about politics and as a young adult found himself on the front lines as an activist for social justice. He followed in the footsteps of his late father, Wayne County Circuit Judge Arthur M. Bowman.

“His love for his city never wavered,” says his daughter, Airica Bowman. His career began as an administrative aide to then-Detroit City Council President Erma Henderson in 1980-86.
He practiced law for 35 years in Detroit and was one of the founding attorneys in 2007 of the Juvenile Law Group where he represented children.
Bowman had a true passion for playing chess, according to his daughter. He was also a jazz enthusiast, loved to plant flowers, liked to work in his garden and enjoyed capturing special moments with family and friends on his video camera.
