A former Trump campaign attorney had asked the courts to dismiss the state’s election results – and hand over the power to make a final decision to the Republican-dominated legislature.
A Michigan federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit seeking to distort the results of the state’s presidential election. The allegations were interspersed with “theories, assumptions and speculations”, but there is little evidence of actual misconduct.
MLive.com reports that the lawsuit was filed last month by Sidney Powell, an attorney who previously worked with the Trump campaign. While the campaign has now distanced itself from Powell, it continues to stand up for its causes.
Powell had sought not only to overturn former Vice President Joe Biden’s victory, but to allow Michigan’s Republican-controlled legislature to pass the state’s votes to Trump.
In her ruling, US District Judge Linda V. Parker said that Powell and her allies appear to have little basis on which to lead a lawsuit against the state.

Indeed, “Parker wrote,” this lawsuit is less about obtaining plaintiffs’ relief – since much of that relief is beyond the power of this court – than about the impact of their allegations on the confidence of the plaintiffs People in the democratic process and theirs. ” Trust in our government. “
“Plaintiffs are asking this court to ignore the orderly legal system of contesting elections and the will of millions of voters,” she added. “The Tribunal cannot and will not do this.
“People spoke,” said Parker.
Parker’s 36-page verdict identified inconsistencies in the lawsuit. Powell, while a lawyer, appears to have purposely avoided making specific allegations of electoral fraud and instead relies almost entirely on unsubstantiated claims about the inherent fairness of the voting process.
“To be very clear,” noted Parker, “Plaintiffs ‘right to equal protection is not supported by the allegation that the defendants’ alleged plans resulted in the votes for President Trump being changed to Vice-President Biden. “
Parker noted that Powell’s lawsuit often used words such as “believe” and “can” rather than terms that indicate a degree of certainty.
The Detroit Free Press notes that the loss of Powell is one of the many litigation defeats, both for the Trump campaign and for its allies. Since Vice President Biden’s victory in November, some Trump supporters have claimed the elections were “stolen” by Democrats.
Although it is often alleged that liberals committed or otherwise facilitated electoral fraud, there is no evidence that such wrongdoing actually took place.
David Fink, a Detroit city attorney, told the Free Press that the dismissal of Powell’s lawsuit was good news for the United States.
“It’s a good day for democracy,” said Fink, “not a good day for frivolous Republican complaints.”
Fink also suggested that Republican lawsuits were unfounded – and should have some ramifications for those who continue to file complaints based solely on unfounded claims.
“Once again a contestation of our number of votes was rejected due to unfounded conspiracy in court,” he said. “Any judge who has reviewed these claims by Donald Trump and his allies has found them for what they are – frivolous lawsuits designed to undermine confidence in our democracy. It is time for the suppliers of these dangerous lies to be sanctioned by the courts. “
