The 10 Commandments to Be a Good Lawyer – Wales News

Nobody wants to be bad at their job, especially as a lawyer, with people’s future in their hands. So what are the 10 commandments to obey as a lawyer?

Some jobs actually require you to be good, if not great, to even be considered for the position. Being a lawyer is one of those roles, especially if you don’t want your law firm to be the subject of an SRA investigation.

This need to be a good lawyer makes sense because you are holding the outcome of people’s lives in your hands. Ultimately, mistakes can cause serious damage.

In this post, we are going to help you become a good lawyer by setting our 10 commandments to be one. Look here…

You should have good …

1. Communication skills

To be a good lawyer, you need to be able to communicate an argument effectively, both in writing and orally. You can’t go into a courtroom and convince a jury or judge of your reasoning if you can’t get your point across.

These speaking skills come over time, so it’s important to practice through shooting and public speaking while studying law. Good lawyers must be able to write clearly, persuasively, and concisely on a wide variety of legal documents.

Of course, communication is not just one-way. Lawyers also need to be able to listen and take effective notes from their clients in order to construct their arguments in the first place.

2. People skills

Knowing your field of law from back to front is one thing – that makes you an encyclopedia – but to be a lawyer you have to be able to work with people. Good lawyers are personable, convincing and can read what their clients want.

Good lawyers also need to be able to read the judge and jury to know when there is a good chance of winning a case and when to come to terms with the best possible offer for their client.

3rd judgment

This is getting very biblical now, but we are not talking about this type of judgment. The type of judgment a good attorney needs is the ability to draw reasonable, logical conclusions or assumptions from the information given to them, however limited.

A critical analysis of these judgments must then be applied to identify where the weaknesses lie so that you can prepare yourself to defend yourself against them. Likewise, you need to be able to spot weaknesses in your opposition’s arguments, so judgment is important.

4. Analytical skills

To understand a case, you need to take in large amounts of information and put it into a manageable and logical summary. Analyzing this information can guide you in many ways, and it is up to the attorney to decide which path to take.

This means that a good lawyer must be able to evaluate and analyze information in order to solve a case the way he and his client want to solve it.

5. Research skills

Analyzing data is one thing, but to be a good lawyer you first need to know where to find that information.

As with many of these other skills, over time they will go from being an attorney using the basic information needed to handle a case to knowing exactly where to look to get the information you need to win one.

6. Perseverance

Sometimes cases don’t go as you’d expect, but if you want to be a good lawyer, giving up is not an option. It would be easy to throw in the towel and be satisfied with the opposition, but that would admit defeat.

If you really want the best outcome for your client and you want to be the best lawyer, you should always look for new angles and do everything in your power to win the case.

7. Creativity

Researching and analyzing information is incredibly important, but sometimes you can’t get what you need and you have to be creative. The most obvious path to victory is not always the best, so being able to look at things from dark angles is a real asset.

8. Commercial awareness

Ultimately, a law firm is a business like any other. They have the added pressure to get justice for their clients, but winning cases ultimately brings them more business. The more business the company does, the more money they make and the more prestigious they become.

Good lawyers need to be able to judge which cases are profitable and which are not. In addition, they need to keep abreast of the latest developments in local, national and global business, especially when it comes to their company and their customers.

For example, the COVID-19 pandemic convinced many people to move, as did the Stamp Duty Land Tax holiday in the UK. Good lawyers will have taken this opportunity and improved their marketing to get more clients through their doors.

9. Teamwork

Lawyers often need to work with colleagues and partners in their law firm and work well with their clients. There are also more peripheral relationships with judges, judges and other members of the judiciary.

To be a good lawyer, you need to be able to work in a team. Otherwise, the lone wolf life will not be led with anyone to help you succeed.

10. Organization

As you look through the list of commandments, there are many tasks a lawyer must do at the same time, and if you can’t organize them all, it can be your downfall.

Good lawyers need to be able to prioritize and focus on the task at hand without getting over the mountain of other tasks that need to be done. The first step in organizing a case is to organize your documents and move on from there.

If you obey these commandments, will you become a good lawyer?

In this post, we’ve managed to cover the top 10 things you need to be a good lawyer.

Most of these attributes will come over time as long as you are aware of them and try to improve them. Plus, they’re not available in their purest form, and striving to embody them actually makes you a good lawyer.
