“The strength of our constitution is being tested like never before in our history,” Castor was quoted as saying in Trump’s statement. “It’s strong and resilient. A document that was written to last forever and will again and again triumph over partisanship. “
The team will also be joined by a former Trump campaign employee, Ted Goodman, who, according to a person familiar with the matter, will assist with communications and public relations on Capitol Hill.
The House approved impeachment proceedings against Trump on January 13 – seven days before he left office – following the January 6 riot at the Capitol that killed five people. The Senate declined to take up this article before Trump stepped down a week later, and most of the 50 Republicans have later claimed it was unconstitutional for the Senate to hold an impeachment trial against a president who is no longer president.
In a Senate split 50:50 on party political lines, Trump is unlikely to be convicted. A conviction would, among other things, prevent him from seeking the presidency again.
Schoen, who is referred to as an “experienced litigator”, recently represented Trump employee Roger Stone on an appeal and joined the case in April 2020.
“He had some compelling problems with the appeal that went to the bottom of the constitutional rights of a fair trial,” said Schön, when Stone dropped the appeal on his beliefs, for which he was later pardoned by Trump.
Schön also appeared in an investigative documentary entitled “Who Killed Jeffrey Epstein?” – and said he believed the financier pedophile was murdered in prison in August 2019. Schön met with Epstein days before his death, he told the Atlanta Jewish Times. He has a long history of defending clients in high profile criminal cases, including organized crime numbers.
Castor is the former district attorney for Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. He attempted a number of high profile homicides but declined to prosecute comedian actor Bill Cosby for sexual assault in 2005. Castor would face harsh criticism after leaving the prosecutor’s office when dozens of other women came forward to blame Cosby, who is now in jail.
Castor later served as one of the county’s commissioners. After the resignation of Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane after being convicted of perjury and abuse of power, Castor served briefly as the state’s acting attorney general in 2016.
Earlier on Sunday, one of Trump’s future jurors said he hoped Trump’s defense would rely on the January 6 facts and not get stuck on other things that could paralyze the case.
“The evidence, as I understand it,” said Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.), “Will focus on whether the president contributed to an atmosphere in which people attack, break-in and threaten the Capitol when You.” will, both members of Congress and Vice President [Mike] Pence. This is the charge. So I would hope that any defense will refute this charge. “
